The Sportsman dates back to the late 1800’s and was originally the County Ground Hotel, hosting many of Bristol’s Edwardian elite wishing to stay next to the Cricket Ground.
In the 1970’s the old stables block, located at the rear of the Sportsman, was converted into The Annexe which is now a pub within a pub.
The Sportsmans and Annexe has been in the Bird family for over 21 years, with Ashley Bird now managing the pub alongside her team of friendly staff. Ashley, who is World Pool Champion, ensures both the Sportsman and The Annexe offer a warm and welcoming environment for all customers.
The Sportsman is most famous for being the local place to enjoy all of your favourite sporting moments. The pub continually showcases live sport on multiple screens throughout the pub and hosts many sporting teams’ post-game rendezvous.
Extending the sporting theme, the Sportsman also offers ten English pool tables, along with 3 dart boards; perfect for a competitive evening with friends.
In both bars you will be greeted with an ever-rotating range of locally sourced ales, including Wickwar’s own brand ales, ciders and a diverse craft lager, wine and spirits selection. The pub is a regular in the Good Beer Guide, so you can be sure to enjoy a perfect pint of cask ale when visiting.
Both Pubs offer their famous stone-baked pizzas and Sunday roasts, alongside a great selection of traditional home-cooked pub grub, with plenty of Vegan and Veggie options too.
Outside, there are two beer gardens, both with large screens for those big event sporting occasions and ideal for those hot summer months.
Whilst the Sportsman caters for over 18’s only, the Annexe offers a family-friendly environment, with children welcome indoors, in the conservatory and the garden area until 8.30pm every day.
